La reconversion au puit Morandat

The history of coal did not left the territory in crisis, experiencing unemployment and without any economical development perspective. Since SOFIREM creation in the end of the1960’s, the closing of mine is anticipated and lead to a diversification of industrial activities, within the perimeter of the 17 municipalities. Rousset area become the first french center for production, research and development of microelectronic sector. In 2004, the Centre Microélectronique de Provence opens in Gardanne, under the authority of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne. However, reconversion remains a hot topic : in a hand, brownfield need to be rehabilitated, and in the other hand subsides for the installation of companies stop in 2011.

Because of the development of commuting and other new residential practices, the basin is now affected by Aix-Marseille metropolitan area dynamics. Urbanisation is spreading to forest and agricultural areas ; shuttles between home and work increase and are issues of concerns ; natural areas are invested urban populations attracted by the countryside ; traditional industrial activities (alumina and electric plants) are questioned by the new inhabitants ; the project of a high speed rail-road between Paris and Nice is a source of worry and debate.

There is no longer territorial unity within Provence Coalfield. Federations of municipalities, which began in the early 2000s, shows its fragmentation. In the North and in the West, the agglomeration of Aix Community includes eleven municipalities. In the South, six municipalities have joined the agglomeration of Aubagne and Etoile Community.
